5.1 Arctic Indians

The governor of New France, Count Frontenac, founded Fort Frontenac in 1673 on Lake Ontario, and gave protection to some Indian tribes allies of the French.

The Portuguese explorer Gaspar Corte-Real and his men on their way to Labrador met some Inuits in Greenland in 1500. A year later Corte-Real kidnapped 50 Indians from the Northeast Atlantic coast and took them to Portugal.
