It is believed that the first settlers on the Red River site of Spiro, Oklahoma, settles around 600. Early Misissippians built a large centre at Spiro which expanded with tome. They built beautiful trunquated pyramids of earth around ceremonial plazas. Their burial mounts reveal sculpture, textile and ornaments. Their descendants, the Caddo, were still there in 1542 when De Soto and Luis de Moscoso visited them.
