The Spaniards of New Mexico sent some raiding parties in Utah and Colorado in 1637 to capture slaves to send them to Spanish settlements in New Mexico. Many captured Utes escaped taking with them horses. Horses allowed the Ute to become one of the most powerful nations of the region and changed the local culture.
