33. General Information from Old Maps

1785

  • Plan of the Borough of Arundel (A)
  • High Street and Tarrant Streets are there as well as Maltravers Street although it was called “Old Market Street” at that time
  • King Street was there but it was called “Panet (or Pannets) Pont Lane”. The map shows that there were six houses on this street but not our. Orchard Place did not exist.

1822
(Arundel Borough Archive P4/1,2)

According to that map King Street existed at that time (but not Orchard Place). There is no indication of any houses or inns on King Street but this does not mean that there are none.

However Newburgh Arms Inn, Swan Inn, King’s Arms, Wheatsheaf and Norfolk Arms are mentioned.

1831
(ref. Ordnance Survey Map of Arundel, 1831. P.M. Arundel-140, By Robert K. Dawson, Lt)

According to this map (Record Office, Chichester) King Street and our house existed at that date but Orchard Place did not exist yet.

1841 Tithe Map

Tithe (or Tythe) was the name of the tax due to the Church at that time.

Both King Street and Orchard Place existed by that time and both our properties are clearly visible.

25 King Street is built on land lot No 382 and 5 Orchard Place on the land lot No 436 whereas the land behind our house at King Street is No 400.

The Cathedral and the railway were not yet there but the Parish Church is obviously shown.

1877 – 25”/miles Survey Map (First Edition)

Both properties are visible on this map as well as the Cathedral, the Parish Church, Railway Line and Station. Strange enough the station is outside the boundaries of Arundel. The Railway Hotel appears also on Queen Street where there is now a Bed and Breakfast.

(Good reference booklet that can be consulted at the Chichester Record Office: Maps for Family History by William Foot, Public Record Office Readers’ Guide No 9)
